Lightning Lane Strategy

Learn when to buy, which rides to prioritize, and how to time your purchases perfectly.

Lightning Lane comes in two tiers at Disneyland Resort. Lightning Lane Multi Pass gives you timed return windows for a selection of rides throughout the day, while Lightning Lane Premier Pass lets you skip the standby line once per ride at any time. Understanding which to use—and when—can save you hours of waiting.

For most visitors, Lightning Lane Multi Pass is the best value. Book your first return window as early as possible—ideally right at 7 AM when the booking window opens for hotel guests, or at park opening for other guests. Prioritize rides with consistently long waits: Space Mountain, Indiana Jones Adventure, and Haunted Mansion at Disneyland, or Guardians of the Galaxy, Incredicoaster, and Toy Story Midway Mania at DCA. Avoid using Lightning Lane on rides that typically have short waits like Buzz Lightyear or Monsters Inc—save your reservations for the heavy hitters.

Timing matters. Lightning Lane return windows tend to push later in the day as slots fill up, so book early and tap in as soon as your window opens. After you tap in, you can immediately book your next Lightning Lane. If you're visiting on a busy day, consider adding individual Lightning Lane purchases for Rise of the Resistance or Radiator Springs Racers, as these rides often have the longest standby waits and sell out of Lightning Lane availability by midday.
