01The setup
The Disneyland Resort has two theme parks: Disneyland Park (the original, opened 1955) and Disney California Adventure (opened 2001). They sit across from each other with Downtown Disney in between. You need both a ticket and a park reservation for each day. Book your reservation as soon as you have tickets since popular dates sell out. A single-park ticket gets you into one park per day, while a Park Hopper lets you visit both. Park Hopper is worth it for multi-day visits.
For first-timers at Disneyland, the must-do attractions: Pirates of the Caribbean, Haunted Mansion, Space Mountain, Indiana Jones Adventure, Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance, Matterhorn Bobsleds, and Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. At DCA, prioritize Radiator Springs Racers, Guardians of the Galaxy: Mission Breakout, Incredicoaster, Web Slingers, and Soarin' Over California. Don't skip the classic dark rides like Buzz Lightyear and Peter Pan's Flight. They're charming even for adults.
02Going deeper
Practical tips first-timers often miss: download the Disneyland app before you arrive for mobile ordering food, checking wait times, and managing Lightning Lane. Use mobile order for counter-service meals. Place orders at 7 AM or right after park entry to lock in your preferred pickup window, especially for popular spots like Jolly Holiday Bakery Café. Book dining reservations up to 60 days in advance for table-service restaurants (Blue Bayou and Lamplight Lounge fill up fast).

If you're traveling with young kids, ask about Rider Switch at any ride with height requirements. It lets your group take turns riding without waiting in line twice, and up to 2 people from the second group ride through the Lightning Lane entrance. If anyone in your party has a developmental disability, look into Disability Access Service (DAS). Pre-registration via video call is required 2–60 days before your trip and covers a party of up to 4.
03Pro moves
Wear comfortable walking shoes. You'll cover 8-12 miles in a day. Bring a portable phone charger since your battery drains fast with the app and photos. Download the Play Disney Parks app for interactive in-queue games (Space Mountain and Star Tours have them). Arrive at the parking structure by 7:30 AM on busy days. Pack light layers since Southern California mornings can be cool even in summer, and the temperature drops after sunset. Don't try to do everything in one day. Pick your top priorities and enjoy them.
